But, the problem should not take that much effort, Nadia. The previous version of this board allowed a new page to open when a link was clicked. The fact that it doesn't in this new board version says the configuration is not set to do so. I'm on other boards which use this version of the board and new pages open when a link is clicked. There must be a place to configure this board software to open a link in a new window. Whoever runs this board software for Maks should know where to find it. Most likely, it's just putting a check in the right place.

On Wednesday, July 30, 2008, I posted about the link problem. Look at my first post, point #3.

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12537&p=88087&sid=424aae80c7cc3556be927aac8060b867#p88087

The submit problem was taken care of. Hopefully, someone will be able to solve the "link" problem soon. I lost this text when I went searching for my post. However, I had copied it as a text message in notepad before I went searching for my message. So, at least, I didn't have to type it all again. Posting a message with a link should be easier and less frustrating.

Hi Jersey Girl,

Can you tell us specifically which links should be made to open in new window when you are posting a reply? A link will always behave the same (open in same or new window) for ALL the forum pages. So, we cannot arbitrarily change all links to open in new window. But a few can be made to do so selectively if appropriate.

Hi Mantra,
Can you post a link to the other forum you mentioned?

Thanks

I'm out of town right now and don't have a link with me. I've tried to guess a link but haven't been successful yet. I'll pm a link when I get back home in about 10 days.

What I'm asking for, and I think it's what Jersey Girl is asking for, is to have all links open in a new window. Decide to look at a link posted in the forum--click on it and the link loads in a separate window (leaving the forum window intact). Receive a link in a pm--click on it and the link loads in a separate window (leaving the pm message intact). If composing or replying to a pm, the same thing--be able to click the link to open in a new window (leaving the composition or reply intact)

Hope this info helps.

Thanks Mantra for the clarifications. We will take it into considerations. There is an issue with some pop-up blockers blocking new windows being opened. And not everyone likes opening new browser windows unless they willfully want to. But we will check the feasibility.

Please send in the other forum's URL at your earliest so we can see how they did it. Most forums works the way this one is working. This is the default setting and for good reasons.

Dance with Me,

Thank you for trying to address this matter, as it has been quite bothersome. Unfortunately, I don't believe we are fully understanding each other regarding these forum (posting) issues.

As Mantra said, it’s not specific links that should open in a new window but ALL links. That is how the old version of this forum operated, and that is how MOST websites (not just message boards) operate.

Right now, regardless of which page of the forum you are reading, or what task you are performing, whether it be replying to a post or composing a new PM, the current page is ERASED if you forget to first copy (CTRL + C) your work every time you click on a link, thus forcing you to start all over again. This is not only a very cumbersome way of doing things on a message board, but extremely frustrating when you lose what you'd been composing, especially when time is of the essence, such as the live threads that begin again tonight.

If I am interpreting your reply to Mantra correctly, it seems that you think that there may be a security risk in making links open in a new window. But how is that less secure than making it open in the same window as the one you are currently viewing? :? It seems to me, the security risk is the same, only that it is far more user friendly to have ALL LINKS open in a NEW window when “wilfully” clicked on (to use your terminology). While the current version of the forum does have its advantages, I personally find it less user friendly than the old one, for this issue alone and I know I am not alone in this matter.

We are all very excited for Maks this season that he has such a delightful partner in Debi, and are enthusiastic to support him again as we always do. It would therefore be very much appreciated if this issue can be urgently addressed in order to enhance EVERYONE’S enjoyment of Maks’ official forum this season and all future seasons to come.

Thanks!

I've pm'd 3 phpBB forums to your Dance with Me mail account. Each of these forums opens a link in a new window.

As for security with "drive-by" downloads, it seems to me that Jersey Girl is right that one is as vulnerable whether a link opens in the present window or a new window. One is still pulling data from that site.

If there is a problem with "pop-up" software, a security configuration in a user's browser allows for a site to be marked as "ok". For example, in IE, it's under Tools/Internet Options/Privacy. When one turns on the pop up blocker, a settings button becomes active to add a site such as this as "allowable". Also, any internet security suite I've used which controls pop-ups also has such a configuration, although I've never had to use such.

Also, would it be possible to have this "Ask moderator" topic be designated a "sticky"? Would be helpful not to have to go searching for it as time passes.

Hi Jersey Girl,

I did not mention any "security risk" and that was not on my mind. Opening new browser windows has no security problem. It is just cumbersome to have too many windows open from one web site and it makes computers run slow as each window occupies some memory from the RAM. Opening new window is not a default behavior of most websites. Over 95% sites on the internet will open all the pages from its own site in its own window.

Mantra,

Thanks for the PM and I really appreciate that. I registered and logged in to the crossfire forum link you sent. And I did not see any new window opening when I clicked on New Topic or Post a Reply buttons (let alone other links). Am I missing something here?

How about this. We can make these 2 buttons (New Topic and Post a Reply) to open in new windows. So whatever page you were on before that will stay there. Will that help? Let us know. If Sarah and Nadia agrees we can make it however it works best for everyone.

Thanks

We are still not communicating here. Having a New Topic or a Post a Reply open in a new window is not what I am requesting. What I'm requesting, and what I think Jersey Girl is requesting, is for a posted link (url) within a forum message or within a pm to open in a new window when it is clicked. For example, if you click on the link below, it will open in this same window.

http://www.google.com

To get back to the forum, the "back" button must be clicked or the page refreshed...and it often shows that this forum page has expired. Then, one has to log in again and find the message which contained the link.

Right now, to get the link to open in a new window, one must hold down the "shift" key when clicking on the link. That is a "work around", but it is so frustrating when one forgets to hold down the "shift" key.

Try this link on Crossfire, click on "latest example" in the first message. The link opens in a new window.

http://www.politicalcrossfire.com/forum ... p?t=129241

As for having too many windows open from one website, I understand that process uses RAM. My behavior with opening a link on this site when I hold down the "shift" key is just viewing one more window, I read it or copy what I want, close it out and come back to the forum window. I'm very aware of slower processors, less RAM and dial-up restrictions, but this process works well on my 5 year old laptop with no problem when I'm required to be away from home.

If still not clear, please let me know. Thanks for your efforts.

Ah, you meant the external links should open in a new window! That certainly make sense. I think it was never specifically mentioned that the "external links from user posts" should open in new window. That is what caused the confusion. We will work on it.

Thanks for your patience.
